It does mean the only way to know what is in it is to test it, and to retest periodically, because a well's chemistry can change with the season, with drawdown, and with what happens on the land around it.

Oxidation and filtration for iron and sulfur generally come before softening, because iron fouls softener resin. pH correction comes before anything it would otherwise damage. Sediment removal goes first, to protect everything behind it. A component that works correctly in the wrong position in that sequence can underperform for years without an obvious failure — which is why the test result, not the equipment catalog, drives the design.
