A conventional softener removes them by ion exchange: water passes through a bed of resin beads that hold sodium or potassium ions and release them in trade for the harder calcium and magnesium ions, which stay behind on the resin. When the resin is loaded, the unit regenerates by drawing brine from the salt tank, stripping the captured minerals off the resin and flushing them to the drain.
Softening is not filtration and it is not disinfection. It addresses hardness specifically. It does not remove sediment, it does not address taste or odor from disinfectant residual, and it is not designed for bacteria. Hardness is measured in grains per gallon, and knowing the number for a specific address is what determines the right unit size and the right regeneration setting — which is why treatment starts with a test rather than with a catalog.
